Build It & They Will Come?

Field of Summer Walk

I’m sure everyone’s seen the Kevin Costner flick Field of Dreams, with the great line; If they build it, they will come. Great for a movie, but not so true when it comes to your website. You can’t just design a site, put it on the web and wait for people to find you. You need to optimize your page so people will find you.

One of the best ways is to work on your SEO – Search Engine Optimization. The better optimized the page is, the higher a ranking it will achieve in major search engine results. Why is that important? In today’s world people have very short attention spans, so if your site doesn’t come up on the first or second page of a Google or Yahoo search, you may be lost forever. Don’t know much about SEO? That’s why you bring aboard a team to help you. At CVA, we are well-versed in techniques to help you improve your SEO.

I’m currently working with two of my clients to improve their SEO and we’ve already seen great results, moving up the ranks every day!

Here are my top tips to help you improve your SEO:

  1. Content is king. Having relevant content on your site that is up to date is one of the best ways to rank high on search engines. Adding new content regularly is really important as it will bring people back and get new people to find you too. A great way to do this is to write a blog, like this one! Don’t have time for a blog? That’s where a virtual assistant comes in. VA’s can write blogs based on content ideas that you provide, or even repurpose articles and other content on your site into blogs and then post them for you too.
  2. Keywords are Key! If your website is about coaching, it’s not enough to just use the word coaching as there are thousands of sites related to coaching. You need to be specific, the more specific the better as this filters out your competition. Think about what your business offers that is unique and brainstorm keywords. So, if you provide coaching for working mothers that own their own businesses, you would want to have the words “entrepreneurial coaching for working moms” throughout your website.
  3. Use Keywords Wisely! After you determine the best keywords, make sure they show up in your site title, in header tags and in your website content. Don’t go crazy though or your site will be flagged as spam. It’s not too late to do it now, this is a perfect project for your VA!.
  4. Make Some Friends! Get other websites that are “trusted” to link to your website. A link to your page from someone else is like a vote for your website. The quantity, quality, and relevance are all important. Don’t forget to be a thoughtful friend and link back to relevant sites. Think about Wikipedia, it almost always comes up first in a Google search because it links to tons of outside sites, has numerous internal links and other websites link to Wikipedia for reference.
  5. KISS. Build clear text links to all parts of your website. Search engines can’t follow image links, animations or Flash – “keep it simple, silly 😉
  6. Map It! Create a sitemap that lists all of the pages on your website. Let your VA review your website, create a sitemap page and use rich keywords for descriptions.
  7. Track It! There are lots of options to use; Google Analytics is a great one because it’s easy and FREE! Your VA can regularly review and report on your progress.
  8. Get Listed! Let your VA submit your page to all of the search engines.

See, it’s not that hard to improve your SEO, and if you use a VA to do all the work, you can sit back, relax and watch your website start to work for you!
