How to Use Your Facebook Fan Page Effectively

According to Digital Buzz, Facebook is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, with over 250 million of them (over 50%) who log in every day. So it makes sense that your business should have a presence on Facebook, right? But how do you make the most of that presence? Here are a few tips:

  1. Create a resource- Use your wall to post information that is truly useful to your fan base… information that they may not be able to get elsewhere. In doing so you will establish yourself/your company/your brand as an expert in the industry.
  2. Post media- People love pictures and videos. But again make sure you are posting pictures and videos that are industry-relevant, and that are a reflection of your expertise.
  3. Ask questions- Ask questions that people will want to answer… Facebook actually has a Question button now that you can use to easily use to either take a poll or ask an open-ended question.

All three of the tips above are aimed at one main goal- encouraging participation. Participation is crucial because the more people that “Like” or comment on one of your posts, the higher up it will appear on Facebook user’s News streams. And the more people that “Like” or comment on your posts, the more chance there is of their friends noticing your page and becoming a fan.

If you are having trouble getting people to participate, you may consider having a contest. For example, offer free product or a free month of service to whoever posts the best video testimonial on your page. A contest like that serves dual purposes… it encourages people to submit testimonials that you can use later AND it encourages people to interact on your fan page. Or you might start out with something a little easier for your fans, and have a photo contest where they have to post a photo that falls into a certain category and the photo that gets the most “Likes” wins.

Lastly, don’t forget about using other non-Facebook outlets to build your fan base. Put a Facebook widget on your blog or website. Tweet about your fan page (and tweet about the contests or cool content your posting on your fan page). And visit other people’s pages! One of the best ways to get people to show interest in you is to show interest in them first.
