What is a Client Advocate, and Why Do I Need One?

One night, my husband quizzically asked me, “What exactly is your job?”

I couldn’t understand why he was asking me that question, but then he said, “I tried to explain to someone what you do, but I couldn’t. I never see you doing the same thing from one day to the next. One day you’re on a conference call, creating spreadsheets and doing research, the next day you’re on the phone discussing marketing plans, editing a website and sending emails. I don’t know exactly what you do!!”

Hearing this made me stop and think, “What exactly do I do? And how do I explain it?” As a Client Advocate, my job entails wearing many different hats, sometimes all at the same time. Here’s the reason why…

My clients range from the sole proprietor who is so overwhelmed thinking he has to do it all himself, to the partnership with differing visions as to how to move the business forward. Or maybe it’s a client with an established business looking for fresh ideas and a new direction, or a client in need of help getting a new business off the ground. Every client is as different as a snowflake, and it’s my job to research and gather as much information as possible to give each client the individual attention they deserve.

The role of a Client Advocate can be explained in many different ways, and means different things to different clients.

  • We are the office manager over-seeing the daily operation.
  • We are the marketing department researching the hottest trends and best methods to attract new customers.
  • We are the editing department, making sure your website, blogs, newsletters and social media interactions are done, and done correctly.
  • We are the troubleshooters, so when something goes wrong or we see the potential for a problem, we’re ready with a resolution before anyone even knows there was an issue.

My favorite way to explain the role of a Client Advocate, which everyone can understand, is we’re much like the CPU in your computer. You know we’re there, even though we run in the background. We keep all your applications running smooth, guide you when installing new applications, alert you when there’s a problem and guide you when it’s time to upgrade.

Client Advocates really do wear many different hats, and are an invaluable resource for our clients. When you tap into a Client Advocate, you’re sure to strike gold!!

I now have such a CA…and what a difference it makes though, for the initial getting-to-know-each-other period, I’m working as hard as ever. BUT, I see how it’s going to pay off, literally and figuratively. I think way too many bloggers and businesses think they can do it all themselves and are too cheap to pay for the expertise they usually do NOT possess!
