Building Your List : Step 2 – Optimizing

Step one in building your list was selecting your list building software and determining what type of information you want to collect through your opt-in box. For this article, we will focus on some of the ways that you can encourage people to click on those fields and opt-in to your mailing list by actually filling them out.

  1. Offer an Incentive. Think about it. If you’ve chosen to add your email to a website’s mailing list, there was usually some type of offer they were promoting that you could only get by signing up. That offer must be enticing enough to allow the person to let down their guard and actually invite more email into an already overflowing inbox. One of the words that will often create that enticement is the word ‘free.’ We love to get something of value for free. It could be a report, a short ebook, a coupon or your newsletter announcing upcoming specials, but make it exclusive to only those who opt-in to your email list.
  2. Make It Easy to Find. In our previous article, we mentioned the use of animated opt-in boxes that pop out or slide onto the screen at a certain point after the person has visited your webpage. This is certainly the optimum in visibility. However, even with this option, the viewer may close the box if they aren’t ready to make the commitment. When the moment comes where they are ready to opt-in, you want them to immediately see that opt-in form. To ensure that it doesn’t get missed, be sure that the box is located above the fold line of your webpage, and for optimum availability, include an opt-in box on every page of your site.   3. Make It Attractive. Many business owners make the mistake of thinking that the opt-in box is simply utilitarian and will go for a simple square box with blank fields for capturing the name and email address. This is a mistake. Every marketing tool needs to be inviting, and the final piece where they actually say ‘yes’ is very critical. Spending a few extra dollars to have your opt-in box custom designed with bright colors and a style that says, ‘You’ve made a great decision!’ is well worth the investment.
