The Reality of Reality


“The Reality of Reality?? Really?!?! That doesn’t make any sense!!”  
Those are the exact words uttered by a client during a recent phone conversation.

You see, part of a Client Advocate’s role is to regularly check in with clients. It gives us an opportunity to assess how we’re doing and what we could be doing better. In this particular case, a routine check in plus one simple question led to one extremely happy client.
During a routine check in call with a client, I could tell that she was exhausted and distracted. When I asked what was wrong, she paused for few seconds, and with a heavy sigh said “there just aren’t enough hours in the day.” Out of concern, I asked her to tell me what was going on.

That was the turning point in the conversation. We stopped talking shop for a moment and started talking on a more personal level. It was then that I learned my client was burning the candle at both ends, trying to squeeze more hours out of a day than humanly possible. Most clients will have a few things on their to-do list. I was in shock as she rattled off a to-do list that would rival a grocery list for a family of four.

She was devoting nearly 100 hours a week to her business. Always the one to be hands-on, she took on every aspect of her coaching business: researching potential speakers, corresponding with potential speaker, assembling speaker packages, scheduling coaching sessions, conducting coaching sessions, keeping up with daily emails, creating and scheduling monthly newsletters, planning and hosting group coaching sessions, planning and hosting special webinars as well as trying to keep up with activity on all her social media pages. In addition to the time she was devoting to her business, she had to make sure there was time for her family. She is married, with two small children who need and demand her attention. Her parents, as well as her in-laws, were living with them as they are all contending with declining health. And just when I thought her to-do list couldn’t get any longer, she tells me that the entire family will be moving overseas in less than two months.

I could tell she felt some relief, just by being able to say all that out loud. But her biggest sense of relief came from what I said next… “We can help!

We started formulating a game plan for her to delegate much of the work she was taking on herself to her VA. She no longer felt like she had to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, and as we concluded our conversation, I asked her to do some homework. I asked her to create a list of every business-related task she was personally taking on, and send it to me.

The next morning, I received an eight page document, and at the top in big bold letters, she had typed…….. The Reality of Reality, It Now Makes Perfect Sense!!

Team CVA was able to successfully step in and take on 90% of the business tasks the client thought she had to take on herself. She now has more time to concentrate on the growth of her business, but more importantly, she has more time to devote to her family and the painstaking details involved in moving and adjusting to living overseas.
