SEO Tactics: Are You Behind the Times?

Search engine optimization or SEO is continuously evolving. Strategies that worked like clockwork just a few years ago are now obsolete. Keyword stuffing and generic content that once were used to gain the attention of search engines are now not only ineffective, they can hurt your SEO efforts. Google, Bing, and other search engines have upgraded their algorithms to spot these artificial attempts to move up the search engine ladder. To get the SEO results you desire, you may need to update your SEO tactics to keep up with your competitors.

SEO Basics for 2016

So what works these days for SEO? There are many different tactics that are used that can enhance your SEO, but one thing is clear – unique content is key. Buying cheap blogs and articles that are artificially “spun” to attempt to be unique is no longer acceptable. Content of a higher quality can gain you better results. Here are a few basic tips:

  • Focus on the topic, not the keyword. Keywords are important, but not when used inorganically. Content with overloaded keywords or phrases are not enjoyable to read and can hurt your SEO ranking. Instead, focus on the topic and provide informative content. Keywords should appear naturally and organically in the content, getting better results.
  • Improve your website performance. It is not just attracting visitors to your site with good content that counts. If visitors leave quickly or “bounce” from your site because it is too slow, poorly designed, or difficult to navigate, this hurts your SEO ranking as well as your sales. Invest in improving the performance and appeal of your website to achieve better results.
  • Mobile-friendly. If you have not done so already, you need to make your website mobile-friendly. Not only is this important for SEO, it is vital for digital marketing success. If consumers can’t easily access your site from their phone or tablet, you are losing potential sales, period.
  • Link-building. Artificial link-building has gone to the same graveyard as keyword stuffing. Search engines sniff out these artificial attempts and penalize for them. However, guest blogging and creating true external links to your site through excellent content are still very effective for both driving traffic and improving SEO.
