How to Write Good Web Copy

One of the best ways to get your website to stand out is by writing excellent web copy. Good web copy is so much different than other types of writing, and what’s considered “good” is often changing. So how do you write good web copy, and how do you make sure that your web visitors don’t click away from your page? Here are some tips on writing effective web copy for your website.

Keep Your Web Copy Short

The most important aspect of web copy is that it is short and concise. If someone sees a bunch of text on your page, it is likely that they will head for the (Internet) hills and click away. Web copy is not really read thoroughly, which is why you want to make sure that it is short and snappy. Keep your paragraphs to no more than four sentences max. The less you write, the better.

Keep your Copy Informational

Your customer or potential customer is coming to your page to find out more about what you do and offer. They’re probably not coming to be entertained (unless you are an entertainment company), so don’t feel like you need to be filling your space with clever or witty sentences. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If you are trying to achieve a certain aesthetic or vibe to your company be sure that your copy reflects that, but don’t stray too far from the message. Stick to writing down what it is you offer and provide for a customer and it’s guaranteed that your copy will be effective.

Also it’s important to make sure that the most important information is at the top of a page. If a web page visitor has to read down pretty far to get to the point—they probably won’t and will click away. Grab your web visitor immediately.

Write for Search Engine Optimization

One of the most effective ways to get someone to your website is by using keywords and phrases that are commonly searched. You’ll want to insert your selected keyword in at least one heading, in the body of the text and definitely in the meta description for that page.
