How to Get More Out of Your Time When the Kids Head Back to School

The most wonderful time of the year has finally arrived: summer is finally over and the kids are headed back to school. It’s not that you don’t enjoy having the kids at home complaining about being bored and hungry, but you’re certainly ready for them to go back (this is especially true if you run a business from home).

When the first school bell rings and the house is finally silent, you may be tempted to just soak it all in and take your time to finish up projects (as opposed to furiously rushing through all your work when the kids were at the pool or at a friend’s house during the summer), but this would be a mistake.

Here’s how to maximize your time when the kids are finally back in school, and you have a few blissful hours of uninterrupted work time.

Make Your Phone Calls When You See the School Bus Leaving

As soon as you see the school bus hitting the dusty trail to school, it’s time to break out the phone. Right after the kids leave for school is the perfect time to catch up on client phone calls, and schedule meetings that you’ve been putting off for fear of interruption from video game sound effects or the dog barking while the kids are running around the house.

Having your phone conversations first thing in the morning helps you get them out of the way, and you are less likely to be interrupted by a kid calling home sick or telling you they forgot their science project.

Schedule In-Person Meetings in the Afternoons

If you’re on afternoon pick-up duty, it’s best to schedule any in-person coffee meetings or client visits for the afternoon. This will ensure that you’re dressed and ready to go for afternoon pick-up at 3:30. (Remember that time when you picked them up in your pajamas and they were mortified?)

Hire a Virtual Assistant to Maximize Your Time in the Evenings

We may make jokes that we can’t wait for the kids to get back to school and get out of our hair, but who are we kidding? We are excited for their return in the evening, so they can tell us about their exciting day in third grade.

To maximize your time with them (and not worry about work), consider hiring a virtual assistant to handle administrative tasks like creating pdfs, social media marketing, client follow-up, and any other needs that may pop up from time to time.
