Time Management during the Holidays: How to Do it and Best Strategies

The holidays are truly one of the busiest times of the year. From making shopping lists, hosting holiday guests (and cleaning like crazy to prepare for them to arrive), attending holiday parties, and organizing everything for the end of the year at work, it can all be a little much.

So what’s the best way to manage your time during this crazy busy season? Here are a few tips to keeping it all together during the holidays.

Make Lists

Before you have a panic attack thinking about all of the things you need to get done, take the time to write everything down. Not only will the writing be cathartic, but it’ll also help you visualize just how much you need to tackle.

Organize the lists however makes sense to you—maybe you’ll have one for family obligations, one for a Christmas shopping list, and one for work. Once you have everything written down, put suggested dates on your items so that you can have goals for getting things done.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Although it may be tempting to just hunker down on the couch and binge watch Christmas movies, try not to put off all of your responsibilities to the last minute. You definitely don’t want Christmas shopping or deadlines to sneak up on you and be completely unprepared to handle the amount of things to get done.

Try to focus on tasks to do each day or each week so that you don’t get completely bogged down at the last minute.

Write Down All Engagements You Have for the Month

Right at the beginning of the month (or the beginning of the busy few weeks), write down every meeting, play, holiday concert, cookie exchange, and fundraiser that you and your family have to do.

Getting it all down on a calendar (whether it’s an old fashioned desk calendar or your Apple calendar) will help prevent you from double booking or committing to too many events.

Hire a Little Extra Help

If Santa can have his elves, surely you can get a little extra help too. If work or administrative tasks are getting to be too burdensome, consider hiring a virtual assistant to help you out during this busy time of year.
