Achieving a Better Work-Life Balance in 2018

You already know that achieving a better work-life balance leads to better health, decreased stress, and an overall life improvement—but how do you actually do it?

Between endless meetings, going after new clients, and the overall daily operations it takes to run your business, sometimes it just seems impossible to leave work at work. Though there are certainly busier seasons at work where you’ll need to stay at the office a little later to get things done on time, making that a regular habit can contribute to increased stress and anxiety (which, news flash, is bad for your health).

As the new year arrives and you’re starting to think about your resolutions, here are a few ideas to help you achieve a better work-life balance in 2018.

Turn Your Electronics Off at the End of the Day

In the modern era of working, it seems like we can never truly escape the work day thanks to our smartphones, laptops, and tablets that are constantly delivering Slack updates and emails. It might be tempting to answer a quick question or two after dinner, but trust us—nothing is truly that pressing that can’t wait until the next morning or after the weekend.

Do yourself a favor and turn off your electronics at the end of the day to avoid becoming chained to your work after hours.

Learn to Say No

Even if you’ve ran your own business for years, you still have the instinct to always say yes to new opportunities that come your way. But before your instincts kick in and you agree, think about it for a minute: is this opportunity really going to be advantageous to your business or are you just saying yes for the sake of saying yes?

Fortunately, we get to the point in our businesses that we can afford to say no to opportunities if they’re not the direction we want to go in or don’t offer enough money to make it worth your while. Learn to say no to some of these opportunities so that you’re not working round the clock to get all of these extra projects done.

Hire More People

Sometimes when you are working constantly in order to check every item off your to-do list, it might be time to step back and evaluate whether or not you need some outside help.

Consider hiring a virtual assistant to do administrative tasks, organize social media, or other projects that could be easily handed to another capable professional.
