3 Ways to Get the Most Out of Any Conference

Love them or hate them, conferences are one of the best ways to get to know other people in your field and to introduce yourself to major influencers in the business. It’s also a great place to learn and to pick up new tricks to bring back home after your “conference endorphins” have worn off.

If it’s your first time to attend a conference, or if you’re unsure of how to really get something out of your upcoming conference, read on for three of our best tips on how to make the most out of any conference.

Ask Questions When You Have Them

It’s likely that during your conference you’re going to have a lot of speakers doing various sessions throughout the duration of the event. Some of these events will be directly applicable to what you do, but others may not be as interesting or useful to you. During the sessions that are really pertinent to your business in particular, be sure to be involved: take notes, pay attention, and whatever you do stay off your phone.

Above all, it’s important that at the end of the session when they ask for questions—don’t just hesitate if you actually have an important/interesting question on your mind. It’ll show the speaker you’re engaged, and it’ll give you an excuse to go up to them afterwards to follow up and have a deeper conversation about the topic on hand.

Network, Network, Network

Everyone uses the word networking as if it’s a bad or shallow thing, but networking is one of the most important things you can do at a conference. Sure, you may not be drumming up business or make a connection with the most influential person in your field, but even making small connections or opportunities can lead you to somewhere unexpected. So, bust those business cards out and put on a smile. You might not ever see these people again so what’s the harm in being a bit extroverted for a few days?

Don’t Forget to Have a Little Fun

Conferences are a lot of information and a lot of work, sure, but they’re also meant to be fun. They’re a small way for professionals to cut loose with like-minded people and have a few chats over beers at the hotel bar. When you’re attending a conference, don’t forget to schedule in a little time to meet up with your new friends for lunch and grab a nightcap with the people you met at the mixer earlier in the day.
