“I Feel Unproductive”: What You’re Doing Wrong

Everyone has days where they feel like they just can’t get anything done. Whether it’s the phone ringing off the hook, the many distractions the internet can provide, or you just can’t seem to keep your focus, sometimes your productivity can feel nonexistent.

But when this lack of productivity isn’t just a fleeting feeling, you might want to check in with yourself to see what it is that’s putting you behind. When you just can’t seem to pick up the pace at work, here are a few things that you might be doing wrong.

You’re Not Taking Breaks

Yes—Taking breaks is actually really good for productivity. Research shows that taking short breaks every couple of hours will help you be able to hold your concentration longer and increase your productivity.

However, when you are taking a break from work, don’t just sit at your desk and look at YouTube videos or check your social media accounts. It’s important to get up, walk around, socialize with a coworker, or take your dog on a walk (if you work from home). Sitting at your desk and staring at a screen won’t cut it when you need an actual break.

You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is so important to productivity (and not to mention a healthy body!). If you’re having trouble sleeping or you’re staying up too late, it’s definitely going to affect your productivity negatively.

Try going to bed earlier in the evening, avoid using a smartphone or tablet before bed, and try some relaxation techniques before you go to sleep like yoga or taking a long bath.

You’re Spending Too Much Time on Email

We receive so many emails each and every day that it often feels really difficult to keep up with it all. However, spending so much time on your email can actually put you behind on everything else. Try setting aside a certain allotted amount of time on your email each hour so that you can focus on other tasks that need your attention first. Unless it’s an emergency (and marked appropriately), it can wait until you’re free.

You’re Spending Too Much Time on Small Tasks

There are many small tasks that are needed to keep a business running—like email, social media, and updating your company website—but these can often bog you down. If you’re in a position that is more focused on creating leads and connecting with clients, spending a lot of your time on these small tasks may be putting you further behind.
