The 3 Best Things About Owning Your Own Business

There’s no question about it: Owning your own business has some serious perks. Not only are you contributing to your local and state economy, but you’re also likely the envy of those around you who are still trying to climb the corporate ladder in their careers.

Even though owning your own business can be challenging and a big undertaking, we still say that the pros outweigh any cons.

In celebration of all those brave business owners out there (and to encourage those who are thinking about taking the plunge), here are the three best things about owning your own business.

You Get to Set Your Own Schedule

Is there anything better than not having to wake up at the crack of dawn to avoid rush hour traffic? When you own your own business it’s unlikely that your commute is long or difficult—and often many business owners have the ability to work in the comfort of their own homes.

When you own your own business you never have to ask your boss if you can take off early to catch your daughter’s piano recital or to beat traffic in order to watch the championship game. When you’re a business owner your work schedule adheres to your life, not the other way around.

You Get to Make all of the Important Decisions

Remember when you were working at your former company and you used to get so frustrated when a decision was made that affected you by someone who could care less about the impact? When you’re a business owner you have the freedom to make decisions to control your own business destiny. And although it’s certainly a lot of responsibility to make the right decision, the choice is yours—and that’s something worth celebrating.

You Are Able to Do What You’re Passionate About

You may have liked your old job, but it may not have been your life’s passion. When you start a business, you have the choice to work on something that you love. Whether it’s graphic design, starting a landscaping business, opening up your own law firm, or selling unique handmade items in the main stretch of your downtown, you were able to find something that you loved to do and turned it into a way to make money. Not too shabby! That old adage is true: Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
