Most Common Ailments from Sitting at a Desk All Day

We all know that “sitting is the new smoking,” but just how much does it actually affect our day-to-day health? Is it really that big of a deal that we are sitting at our desks all day, or is it overblown?

It turns out that, yes, sitting is a big deal. The Mayo Clinic reports that sitting for a long period of time does indeed give you a higher number of health concerns such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and high cholesterol levels. In fact, sitting can be so dangerous that in an analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels, it was found that those people who sit for more than eight hours per day with no physical activity had a risk of dying that was on par with the risks of obesity or smoking.

So, what comes from sitting and working at a desk all day? Here are the most common ailments from your office job.

Lower Back Pain

All of the hours spent slouching over our computers can wreak havoc on your backs—especially our lower backs. This lower back compression can lead to disk degeneration, which is often the cause of lower back pain.

Eyestrain

Just as we spend hours slouching over the computer, which can cause back pain, we also strain our eyes for hours, looking at the bright blue hued light from our computers. Because this is not a natural source of light and because it’s likely that our desk setups aren’t as ergonomic as they should be, it’s likely that eventually this will lead to some eyestrain.

Gut Growth

It’s not a secret that a sedentary job where you have to work at a desk can lead to a bit of belly growth and weight gain. However, gaining weight in your middle can lead to an increased chance of diabetes, cancer, or heart attack and stroke.

Carpal Tunnel

All those hours we spend typing away at our computers with poor posture can cause symptoms of carpal tunnel, which means tingling fingers and hands that could possibly lead to surgery.
